The BeaGood team had the privilege of visiting Bengkala Village — a remarkable and hidden gem nestled in Kubutambahan District, Buleleng Regency, Bali. This visit carried a humanitarian mission: delivering aid to local families while organizing a free health screening for elderly residents, particularly members of the Kolok community — the local deaf-mute community.
Bengkala Village is not just a picturesque village in North Bali. It is extraordinary and world-renowned for its identity as the “Kolok Village” — the Village of the Deaf. For generations, a portion of the village’s population has been born with congenital deaf-muteness due to a natural local genetic condition. The village has sometimes been called “the village cursed by the gods” because of this hereditary condition passed down through generations.
Yet what is most remarkable about Bengkala Village is not the condition itself — it is the village’s extraordinary inclusivity:
Local Sign Language (Kata Kolok): Every resident — both Kolok (deaf-mute) and Engket (hearing/speaking) — is fluent in Bengkala’s unique local sign language.
Harmonious Life: There is no discrimination. Kolok residents actively participate in traditional ceremonies, local dance (Tari Maboros), and community security roles.
During BeaGood and Good People’s journey through Bengkala Village, we distributed aid to low-income families and collaborated with students from Udayana University’s Faculty of Medicine to provide free health services, including vital sign checks (blood pressure and heart rate monitoring to detect hypertension), basic blood tests (blood sugar, uric acid, and cholesterol levels), and free health education and consultation.
